MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

By tailoring its mechanical construction and HVAC systems design/build process, Illingworth-Kilgust Mechanical enabled this client to complete a long-term project faster and with more accurate documentation than might otherwise have been the case.

The project involved progressive demolition of over 800,000 square feet of occupied buildings. To achieve this without seriously disrupting the client's business, the construction team walled off one section of the buildings at a time, and demolished it down to the concrete floor and ceiling. As part of this process, we disassembled all heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The complete demolition required about 20 phases over a five-year period.

Following each demolition phase, we designed the new mechanical systems for that area. Since this was "shell" space, the client could respond to actual – instead of hidden – conditions, eliminating the lengthy delays that often occur when change orders are issued during a re-design process. Furthermore, rather than providing final drawings that approximated the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems installation, the company's drawings recorded exactly where everything had been installed, making future servicing and alterations easier.

Following design approval, we installed the specified HVAC systems. Overall, the mechanical construction scope of work called for commercial heating and cooling systems installation of new chillers and cooling towers, new variable air volume boxes, an industrial HVAC ductwork distribution system and linear diffusers.

Other Information: Illingworth-Kilgust Mechanical had prior experience with the CUNA Mutual Group (CMG). In fact, our field superintendent was part of the team involved in this facility's original construction during the 1960's and 1970's.
